Cold weather, rain and wind could not stop Culver City High School’s determined track and field teams last Thursday night at the Ocean League finals at Lawndale High School.

The Centaurs supplied their own thunder and lightning, capturing three championships out of four divisions.

The girls varsity, girls freshmen/sophomore and the boys freshmen/sophomore teams won their divisions,  and the boys varsity team lost the championship by seven points to host Lawndale.

“A great showing by our teams,” said Coach Jahmal Wright.  “Everyone came through with big performances despite the weather.

The CIF prelims will be held Saturday at Moorpark High School. Field events start at 11, and the first running event will begin at 12.

The Centaurs qualified 15 different athletes, plus four relay teams for the CIF prelims.

Sprinter Joylyn Dailey, who won the 100 and 200 meters and ran on both winning relay teams, is the varsity leader.  Nia Garcia will compete in the 100 and 300 hurdles and the long jump.

Amber Wacker, winner of the 400 meter run, will also compete in both relays.

Other Centaurs girls who qualified:

Yasmin Randa Ashley in the high jump, Isis Golden in the triple jump, Audrey Davies in the discus, Veronica Mendez in the 100 and 200 meters.

Destinee Augustus will run in the 200 and 400, and Cedrinae Thompson in the 100 hurdles.

Wacker, a senior, said it “feels great” to be in the CIF, but she was sad because this was her last league meet.” I love all of my teammates,” she said after winning the 1600 meter relay. “I will come back next year to visit my friends and coaches.”

Wacker hopes to be running track at Azusa Pacific University next year.

The boys’ varsity team will rely on Jarrett Anderson, who will compete in the 200, 400 and the 4X100 and 4X400 meter relays.

Other boys who qualified:

Samuel Robert in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Cameran Newman and Richard Yoshida in the shot put.

Outstanding performances were turned in by freshmen and sophomore girls –Madison Roberts in the 100 and 200, Amanda Jaramillo in the 200 and 400, and Kathy Hermosillo in the 800.

Jasmine Marrero continued her unbeaten freshman season by winning the 100 and 300 hurdles. Angel Morris placed second in both hurdle races and she won the high jump.

Nick Bradley and Jonathan Martin led the freshmen and sophomore boys with outstanding marks. Bradley won the 100 and 200 meters, Martin won the 100, 200 and the 400 meters.  “I feel great,” said Martin after last week’s meet.  “I did the best I could.”
