Dateline Dayton — Pauline and I were in Middletown last Friday for our grandson Kyle’s graduation from Madison High School. A smart young man, Kyle wasn’t that interested in school. “It’s boring,” was his standard response. As with everything in life, school success is how you apply yourself. Even with a poor attitude, he ended the year with better than a 4.0 average. He admitted he could have done better.

Kyle has decided to enter the Navy. If he had known he wanted to enter the service of our country upon graduation and would have applied himself during his high school years, he might have received an academy appointment. His goal is to become a nuclear engineer.

After the graduation ceremony, a nice program with no long speeches, we headed to a restaurant for a late supper. A disaster. Although the restaurant was not busy, service was poor, food was bad and orders were taken mistakenly. This local chain just was purchased by an investment group that faces a huge chore.

We went home to Piqua last Sunday to attend church with my brother, sisters and their spouses.

After breakfast, we took flowers to the cemetery to plant in the flower pot on the gravesite of Pauline’s family. For more than 100 years, a cast iron urn was here until it was stolen two years ago. Now we use a plastic pot. I trimmed the shrubs around the graves of my family.

On Memorial Day, we went to church at St. Helen’s where they have a special Mass, followed by a flag ceremony and later a reception. We have been attending this Memorial Day service for years.

I spent my day off working on the major remodeling project at our son Chris’s home. Had to have the electrician back to install a light and fix electrical problems. Matt took care of everything in short order.

Now we are on our way to Michigan to attend granddaughter Emily’s graduation from Niles High School.
