Dateline Dayton — Although we were planning to watch our granddaughter Madi play basketball last Saturday, we attended a funeral instead. A member from our church, whom we both knew, died. Lynn and her husband Jim, who taught our kids at Carroll High School, were collectors, as I am. In addition to church, we would see them at various auctions.

One time I was searching for a postcard that I needed to complete a Dayton set. Lynn found the card. Although she was willing to give me the card, I did pay for it. Last time I saw her at an auction, she didn’t recognize me and you could tell there was a problem, as she was having trouble bidding and Jim would help her.

Travel Time

I am in Northern California today visiting a high school classmate in Grass Valley whom I haven’t seen since 1979.

Pauline and I last visited Dave in 1979. He lived in San Francisco. At that time, he owned a travel agency and provided us a tour of the city as well as a day in Napa Valley. This was the last time we both were in California. I was in Culver City two years ago at this time, visiting Ari. I hope both of us will be able to visit him next year at end of January.

Dave and his wife operate a restaurant. I will meet him at the restaurant and have lunch there. Since it’s a Mexican restaurant and I’m not a fan of this type of food, we will have to see what develops. On our 1979 visit, he and his wife took us to a Chinese restaurant. That was my first time for Chinese and today I enjoy some Chinese dishes.

Friday morning I will fly to Las Vegas to participate in the Silver Strike Tournament, at the Four Queens. This will be the first time attending this event alone. My brother-in-law Willie usually goes with me. He is not up to traveling. Although my schedule is tight, I may take in a show since Willie doesn’t enjoy these performances.

I hope to have a good report for you next week on the Silver Strikes tournament. I can only improve. I finished in last place a year ago. If you are not in the money, last place is where to finish. You are rewarded with a gift. Time for me to finish in the money!
