Re: “Every School Board Member Wins Extra Year”

When the terms of members of the Culver City School Board and all school boards throughout the state recently were extended by a year to conform with the election cycle, Supt. Josh Arnold was asked if it would make a difference, psychologically or otherwise, in the full picture.

Yes, there will not be a School Board election in Culver City this summer and autumn – not until next year.

Dr. Arnold was prepared. “Fortunately for us,” he said, “we have a fantastic Board. This just extends our fantastic-ness.

“If it were anything other than that, there would be things to think about. We don’t have that. That is one of the beautiful things about Culver City.

“We have a Board that is attuned, understanding, aware and smart about what is going on in Culver City Unified, how things impact our students, teachers and families.

“And so we are assured of more of that thinking and decision-making for at least another year.”

What Is New?

Midway through Dr. Arnold’s first year as superintendent, what have been his biggest challenges?

“They always are going to be the same things,” he said. “For us, we are focused on academics, the arts, athletics and activities.

“We want to do all of that in a way that keeps our students, teachers and families emotionally, physically and psychologically safe at all times.”

Summing up, Dr. Arnold said “that is what we do. We don’t do anything else. What has been great about it is that we have had some tremendous successes. We won a CIF volleyball championship. We are rebuilding the Frost Auditorium, modernizing it to the point it will be the premiere arts facility on the Westside of Los Angeles.

“Other than Royce Hall, it will be the biggest and best” at its scheduled reopening in December.
