Fiesta LaBallona Returns in Two Weeks

Fiesta La Ballona presents three days of free live music and dancing as part of Culver City’s annual Party in the Park on the last weekend of the month, Aug. 25-27.

Fiesta, at Vets Park, is produced by the city, by the Fiesta La Ballona Committee, by sponsors, and almost 100 volunteers.

As Culver City’s Centennial year approaches its final month, the Fiesta entertainment program celebrates a century of music with diverse performances.

The Entertainment Tent will open at 4:30 on Friday, Aug. 25, with Corey and his Cohorts performing early jazz and swing classics.

Opening Ceremonies will begin at 6 o’clock with Mayor Jeff Cooper, the City Council, various commissioners and the Fiesta La Ballona Committee.

Fiesta-Palooza will start at 6:30pm. Fiesta-Palooza, at 6:30, coordinated by Flynn Namala and Ryan Silver of The Blank Minds, will showcase local teen bands Eliza, The Narts, Leaving London, Mediocre and Street Play.

Street Corner Renaissance, a doo wop quintet, will launch Saturday’s performances at 12 noon.

They will be followed by Grupo Folklorico Macias performing folk dances of Mexico.

Fortunate Son will pay tribute to the best of Creedence Clearwater Revival at 1:45 before dances of Grupo La Rosa.

Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps will sing the blues at 3:30 before the Ho’Aloha Polynesian Dancers take the stage at 4:30.

At 5:15, Corday Undercover will perform ‘80s hits and beyond.

On The Edge Dance Studio will feature hip-hop and jazz.

Starting at 7, Fiesta will present Hollywood Blonde in a two-hour dance party featuring top 40 hits.

Cali Rose & The CC Strummers will open Sunday’s program at 11 a.m. with ukulele sounds.

Orquesta Charangoa, a traditional Cuban orchestra, follows. This performance is sponsored by Lo Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

Xorotroptzi will follow with Bulgarian heritage dance.  Sunday afternoon will spotlight Crawdaddio performing zydeco music at 1:30, followed by Brasil Brasil Cultural Center entertaining the crowd with capoeira.

Quitapenas offers Afro-Latin music at 3:15 ahead of Ballet Folklorico de Claudia Jeanette.

The Fenians close the entertainment program on Sunday with an hour-long set of Celtic rock at 5.

Stilt walkers, provided by Red Swan Entertainment, will intermittently rove the park both Saturday and Sunday.

Fiesta hours are 4:30 to 10 on Friday, 11  to 10 on Saturday, and 11 to 9 on Sunday.
