A perspective on the Aeolians

Third in a series

Re “Culver City’s Romantic, Historic New Link

Raving about the Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily when an official Culver City delegation visited in May, Vice Mayor Thomas Small painted an irresistible portrait,

“When we visited the islands we stayed in the home of one of our colleagues, a City Councilman from Capo d’Orlando,” Mr. Small said.

“The Aeolians are incredible. Like the most beautiful Mediterranean islands you could imagine. Kind of the way you would imagine Greek islands, but with much better food.”

The Culver City party, which  included Mayor Jeff Cooper and former Mayor Jim Clarke, was on an 11-day mission with Sister City leaders to size up Capo as the community’s prospective next Sister City partner.

Mr. Small – who celebrated his 17th wedding anniversary yesterday with wife Joanna Brady – said that Capo d’Orlando “has a pretty vibrant economy. At the same time, it is a quiet, out of the way place. Unlike Culver City, it is not near a large city.”

Capo community leaders are entrenched in the economy. “The mayor has a company that makes fruit juices that are sent all over the world,” said the vice mayor, no stranger to that part of the world. “Many others who own restaurants and hotels are involved in tourism.”

And so the table appears set for Culver City and Capo d’Orlando to officially become Sister Cities.
