Coach Wright

Culver City High School appears to be taking a page out of the UCLA book.  Coach Jahmal Wright has not named a starting quarterback after the Blue and White game last Saturday even though the season starts one week from Friday, on Sept. 4.

In the Blue and White game, the annual intersquad scrimmage, both candidates, Bryce Lewis-Wolfe and Jonathan Martin, showed they are capable of running the offense.

“We will sit down and look at the film,” said Wright.

“Hopefully we can make a decision that’s best for this team.

“I have a lot of confidence in both players. They are young but they bring a lot of good qualities to the table.”

Sophomore Martin quarterbacked the freshman team last year.

Lewis-Wolfe, a junior, quarterbacked  the junior varsity last season.

So this is the first varsity season for both players.

“If I am the starter,” Martin said, “I will do whatever it takes to win each game.”

Martin led the freshman team to a 9-1 record.

“I am looking forward to the season,” he said, “and I am excited.”

Another excited player is senior receiver/ defensive back Mason Mulvihill who also plays baseball.

“We look a lot better than we did last year,” said Mulvihill.  “We have a lot of new additions, and there are people stepping in and playing both ways.”

After last year’s 2-8 record, Mulvihill said there is renewed pride in making major improvements.

“If people don’t have faith in us, we hope to prove them wrong,” he said.

Proving skeptics wrong will start at the offensive and defensive lines.  If the offensive linemen can protect the quarterback and the defensive line can stop the run, the Centaurs will be competitive.

“I like the way we look right now,” said speedy running back Cahlil Hooper. “We  need to execute better, though.

“We are young. We still are learning.”

The Centaurs are faster, says Hooper, “and I think we will be able to score more points.

“We have a good coaching staff. This team will go as far as the coaches take us.”
