Culver City High School’s boys and girls lacrosse teams, the boys and girls track and field teams, the softball team and the boys volleyball team are all staying competitive in the Ocean League this spring.
The girls lacrosse team came up with a big win last Monday, beating Santa Monica 10-2. That was important because Santa Monica had beaten the Centaurs the last time, 9-7.
“This time we played as a team,” said Coach Riley Ashland, a former women’s college lacrosse player. “Santa Monica is a great team, but we came out strong. We just have to take it one game at a time and finish the season on a high note. She said the “support we are getting from our fans and parents is awesome. The new field and bleachers have helped our program.”
Senior Dana Chung is impressed with first-year coach Ashland and hopes Culver City girls’ lacrosse continues to improve.
“It’s cool to see her bring some new ideas to the program,” said Chung. “She has a little different way of doing things. It’s inspiring to know she played lacrosse in college.”
The girls lacrosse team is 2-3 in league play, for second place. They are 2-9 overall. They play at Beverly Hills on Monday at 6 and at Hamilton on Wednesday at 5:30.
The boys lacrosse team, 4-1 in the Ocean League and 7-4 overall, will be at home against Beverly Hills on Friday.
The unbeaten track and field teams are busy this week. They have a dual meet at home Thursday against Hawthorne at 3.
On Friday and Saturday, the boys and girls will compete in the South Bay Championships at South Torrance High School.
On Friday the freshmen and sophomores boys and girls teams will compete at 5 and the varsity teams at 5 on Saturday.
The 7-6-1 girls softball team has two home games, against Hawthorne Thursday at 3 and Tuesday against Beverly Hills at 3.
The boys volleyball team, 5-9 overall, is 3-2, third place in the Ocean League.
They play El Segundo at home Thursday at 3. The Centaurs will host their own invitational tournament on Saturday inside the Culver City gym. The invitational starts at 8 a.m. They play first-place Santa Monica on Tuesday at 3 at home.
