USC hosted UCLA’s track and field team last Saturday in a classic battle where the Trojans won both the men’s and women’s meets.

Meanwhile Jonny Moniz, a former Culver City High School runner, helped the Bruins almost score an upset.

The  meet came down to the final event, the 1600 meter relay.

On the first leg. USC pulled slightly ahead.

On the second leg, former Centaur  Moniz took the baton and ran down the USC runner to put the Bruins in the lead.  Unfortunately, though, the Bruins anchor leg runner pulled up lame. The Trojans went on to win the race and the meet.

Moniz, who had placed fourth in the open 400 meters in 48.35, was just happy to be back on the track.

Since he has been hurt this season, “it felt good to be able to help my team,” said Moniz. His fastest time this year is 47.10.

While Moniz enjoys running for UCLA, he misses his days at Culver High.

“At first, I was running the 800 meters,” he said. “Then coach (Rayfield) Beaton at Culver City told me that my best event was the 400.  I was happy to run for Culver City.  I loved every minute of it.”

The Bruins and Trojans will meet once again in the Pac-12 finals at UCLA on May 16-17.  Some of the best track and field athletes in the world will be competing for the conference championships.
