One of the hardest assignments in coaching is to replace a legend.

John Sargent coached Culver City High School softball for 25 years.

He also worked campus security and for the recreation department. His presence was felt throughout the community.

Javier Gabby Chacon is his successor.

“John Sargent left a legacy of hard work and dedication,” Coach Chacon says.

“I came in at the perfect time.  We have good players, a new facility, a great administration and great parents. Our  chemistry is second to none.”

Chacon and assistant coach Jose Mejia inherited a young team with experience.

The Centaurs have one freshman, six sophomores, six juniors, three seniors —  a good combination for the present and the future.  “A good mixture,” said Chacon.

“Our No. 1 pitcher, Emily Piera, and our backup catcher, Eva Fairbanks, grew up together. They have great chemistry. All  of our girls are hungry to win and to play Culver City softball.”

The Lady Centaurs, 7-9-1 overall, are in third place in the Ocean League at 2-1.

They are at Lawndale on Thursday at 3:15 before return home for two important games next week.

The Lady Centaurs play second-place El Segundo at 3:15 on Tuesday and first-place Santa Monica on Thursday at 3:15.

“One of our goals this year is to win the Ocean league,” Chacon said.

The top of the lineup – shortstop Sidra Montoya and second baseman Julia Perez — has brought smiles to the new coach.

“Our centerfielder and backup catcher Mariko Rooks is also doing a great job,” said Chacon.  “She is a hard worker and very intelligent.”

Right now the softball program appears to be in the right hands but time will tell if Chacon is wearing the right shoes to fill the void left by Sargent.

Meanwhile…

Elsewhere on campus, all four track and field teams are home to challenge Beverly Hills at 3 on Thursday.

All four are undefeated.

They hope to carry momentum into next week’s Ocean League prelims and finals at home on Monday and Thursday.

The first-place Centaur baseball team (4-0) hosts Santa Monica at 3 on Thursday. They are12-7 for the season. Santa Monica is 12-8 and 4-0.

The Centaurs play at Beverly Hills at 3 on Tuesday.
