Mike HennesseyDateline Dayton — New Year’s Eve was so tame. We went out to eat with friends, and by 7m we were back home. Watched TV, took a nap, and in bed before midnight. Happy New Year. Fireworks? If there were, I didn’t hear a sound.

Early Friday morning I was on my way to Virginia, with my friend Antique John. I call him that so no one confuses him with our son Jon.

I was able to get a Cash Register Collectors Club member to donate two registers to the British Transportation Museum. I even volunteered to pick up the registers. Antique John has wanted to visit a Club member in Maryland. This was the perfect opportunity to accomplish both tasks.

Light traffic on New Year’s even though it was a Friday. We made excellent time, even with a few antique store stops.

Upon arriving at club member Don’s beautiful home, Antique John was given a tour of cash registers, antique furniture, clocks and outstanding lamps. Just after 5 o’clock, we had the register loaded and were on our way to Dick’s.

This required us to take the bypass around Washington, D.C., and I sure appreciated that John was driving. Traffic was so dense. If it is this thick on a holiday, what must it be like on Monday morning? No wonder nothing gets accomplished in Washington. Everyone must be frustrated just getting to their destinations. “Work” and “Washington, D.C.” cannot be used in the same sentence.

Dick and Joan, as usual, were gracious hosts. Dick showed Antique John all of his registers, telling him how each is distinct. Dick appraising the cash registers that Don was donating to the museum.

By 10, we were back on the road, looking for a place to spend the night. Found a nice motel, at a reasonable price off Interstate 70.

En route home, we made numerous antique store and flea market stops plus a complete traffic stop for 90 minutes due to an accident. We were back home before midnight.

Another sad day at our company, a funeral for the mother of Steven, a company employee.
I went to the visitation and stayed for the service along with a few others from work.

I hope everyone had a perfect start to the New Year.
