Dateline Dayton — I told you awhile ago about the mother who left her children home alone to go out drinking, and she returned to find them dead in a fire. She was in court last week, and I am happy to report she was found guilty of child endangering. She will be sentenced later.
Parents must realize their first responsibility is caring for their children. They must provide them children with a loving home, proper discipline and respect for authority.
Oh, Clerk?
Kim Davis, the county clerk in Kentucky is attracting far too much media attention. If her religious beliefs are as strong as she claims, she should resign. If she refuses, she should be removed from office.
I hope I am considered a religious person, not a fanatic, which I believe Ms. Davis is. She only seeks to make a name for herself. We help her achieve that goal with every media story. And here I am writing about her. Resign, Ms. Davis. Stop all of this nonsense.
It is okay if you want to spend time picketing for your cause. However, if you really want to do good, pursue the root cause. Usually it is government. Get persons elected who share your values and concerns.
Busloads go to Washington every year to protest a range of causes. I think they are just taking a vacation. Nothing is accomplished by these jaunts. It would be more useful to invest the cost of these trips into supporting candidates who will push for their causes.
The National Football League is a real joke, and the New England Patriots are in the news again, this time for headset interference.
Sure the league provides the headset, but how do you explain that the problem always went away when an official came to check and returned when he left. Sounds funny to me, but I am no audio expert.
I read yesterday that a player was told not to score. What kind of nonsense is that? Pete Rose is banned from baseball. But what happens to football players? They make millions. Something is wrong with major league sports. Support your favorite college team.
On Saturday, after breakfast at Lincoln Square Restaurant in Troy, we went downtown to visit the replica of Lincoln’s funeral train, on display next to the courthouse. Amazing, a full size replica of the train carrying the coffin of our assassinated president 150 years ago.
In 1865, the train traveled through 180 cities, on the way to Springfield, IL, where Mr. Lincoln was buried on May 4.
Piqua, my hometown, was one of the cities the train passed through. Once again, though, we let Troy get the jump. Ten thousand stood in the rain to see the train pause in Piqua.
Piqua is considering having the replica train in the next year. I believe that would be a mistake. So many Piquads were in Troy for the special occasion.
The funeral train is a reproduction of the 1860s era steam railroad locomotive, No. 63. More than 24 locomotives actually pulled the original train.
It was worth the $5 ticket to inspect the inside of the car.
