I am impressed that the Sierra Club has endorsed Councilwoman Meghan Sahli-Wells, Thomas Small and Daniel Lee for City Council in the April 12 election.
From what I understand, the Sierra Club used a thorough process and determined that these candidates are by far the best in terms of their environmental records and their understanding of the steps our city should take to meet our residents’, workers’ and visitors’ needs for health and safety.
What could be more important than our health and safety?
My understanding is that the same three—Ms. Sahli-Wells, Mr. Small and Mr. Lee–also were endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters, another important environmental organization.
I just learned that a third environmental organization, Vote the Bike L.A. –this one focused on the values of biking and other ways to get people out of their cars — has endorsed our Councilwoman while also touting the fine environmental records of Mr. Small and Mr. Lee.
For these reasons and many others, Thomas, Meghan and Daniel are the candidates for whom I will be voting.

These are three outstanding candidates. And none have been endorsed by the powerful Chamber of Commerce, which is a plus for them in my opinion. If you want to know more about how important it is to break the hold of the city’s Chamber on the City Council, take at look at two books reviewed in the recent issue of the New York Review of Books: Lee Drutman, The Business of American Lobbying, and Alyssa Katz, The Influence Machine: The U. S. Chamber of Commerce and the Corporate Capture of America.
