Thomas Small today has received the endorsements of the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters and Vote the Bike L.A. in his bid for a seat on the City Council in the Tuesday, April 12, election.

“These important organizations and their leaders are stewards of our precious environment,” Mr. Small said.

An environmental sustainability expert, his expertise includes architecture, urban and sustainable design, planning, conscientious development and historic preservation.

Mr. Small is an architectural writer and consultant, a Cultural Affairs Commissioner, and a Yale graduate. He recently taught a course in Sustainability for Organizational Change at the UCLA Extension.

The Sierra Club cited Mr. Small’s “strong record of environmental accomplishment and an impressive perspective on steps Culver City can take to improve the environment.”

The League of Conservation Voters endorsed Mr. Small for “his passion for sustainable urban design, linked with smart transportation. Thomas will be a strong environmental leader on the City Council, fighting for a strong sustainable future for the city.”

Bike the Vote L.A., whose members focus on active transportation and safe streets, gave Mr. Small an A rating because “he is a frequent bike-commuter who shows an exceptional grasp of the concepts of – and need for – livable streets.  He is a superb candidate with a vision to improve livability and increase mobility options in Culver City.”

In seeking the endorsement of environmental groups, Mr. Small shared the plan he is taking to the residents.

“Fracking, oil drilling and other extraction processes are dirty, harmful and dangerous,” Mr. Small said. “We must protect the health of our residents by enacting strong regulations to limit them.

“Renewable energy sources, such as solar power, will enable us to secure a sustainable and resilient energy future for Culver City. I will be a champion for renewable energy sources.

“Ballona Creek could be a gem. It could, and should, provide a healthy habitat for fish and plants. That takes clean water. I will prioritize the transformation of Ballona Creek. I will work at the regional level to ensure that the water is clean before it enters the creek.

“Here in Culver City I will lead us toward making Ballona Creek a (modestly) landscaped recreational waterway that we will use and enjoy as never before.

“Achieving environmental sustainability throughout our city,” Mr. Small said, “is imperative.  But the city can’t do it alone. I will work collaboratively with the School District to create a joint sustainability master plan.

“Our students, even the youngest of them, are already making environmental decisions.

“Whether by collaborating with the schools or reaching out directly to families,” he said,
“I will encourage students and families to conserve, to become stewards of the earth.”
