One month ago last Saturday, I was sworn in as one of the new members on the Board of Trustees for the Los Angeles Community College District.
Fifty years ago last week, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed, affording all citizens the right to vote.
One of my first acts as a Trustee was to co-sponsor a board resolution commemorating the 50th anniversary of the VRA.
My resolution urged Congress to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2015. My colleagues on the Board unanimously passed the resolution.
One of our next steps will be to ensure that all of our students in the District are registered to vote.
I am excited to serve as a Trustee on the Board for the Community College District.
Community colleges are the lifeline to affordable higher education, solid careers, second chances. I intend to make sure the lifeline only gets stronger.
I am grateful that I was able to celebrate being sworn into office with my mom, dad, step-dad, and many friends and loved ones.
I am grateful, too, that state Sen. Holly Mitchell (for whom I formerly worked) administered the oath of office.
Those are some reasons the past month has been incredible.
