Mike HennesseyDateline Dayton – Such a week this has been. Thursday afternoon Pauline and I attended a diabetic workshop. My doctor does not like my sugar level. He directed me to take a pill and strongly suggested I attend this class. No surprise to me that my sugar level is high. Besides being old, fat and ugly, I like candy. Couple this with the history of diabetes on both sides of my family, and I am a good candidate. Pauline has had high sugar levels for years. Her doctor never has told her she has diabetes.

The workshop was interesting, filled with helpful suggestions. I have given up candy, although I know that is not entirely true. I do not eat candy per say. But what about chocolate chip cookies? Although they said cold cereal was bad, I am going to find it hard to give up my Cheerios after 70-plus years. If I have to cook something, I will need to add an hour to my morning routine.

Friday evening we went out to eat with friends who also enjoy Italian food. We were back at Tony’s this time. We have been unable to find anyplace that compares. Since our friends live in Englewood, where Tony’s is, we went to their house for dessert. We didn’t stay late because it was snowing.

We spent Saturday daytime at home. In the evening we attended a fish fry at Holy Trinity Church, in downtown Dayton. We always enjoy these outings – they are not crowded, the fish and sausage are unusually tasty. A real meal.

Sunday was church, followed by coffee and donuts. Since it was Valentine’s Day, I had to treat Pauline. We actually celebrated Valentine’s Day and the Chinese New Year on Friday evening. After enjoying a doughnut, maybe two, we were off to the grocery to get a few items we needed.

A Hospital? How Unique

Next stop was to see Pauline’s brother. He was awake, but didn’t have much to say. Upon returning home, our son Jon, was there with daughter Julia. Madison, his other daughter, was ill. They stayed for a while, and then Darlene made her regular Sunday evening call. She said she wasn’t feeling well. Conversation didn’t last long. Later son Chris stopped by, dropping off a box of candy for Mom, just what she needs, and box of moon pies for me. They are not candy, right?

Monday afternoon Darlene’s husband Mike called to say our daughter had been hospitalized with breathing difficulties.

Monday evening we were at the funeral home for the sister of a classmate of mine. That was followed by supper and our granddaughter’s basketball game. She did get to play a good portion of the game, but they lost.

On Tuesday, we attended the funeral for my classmate’s sister and stayed for the luncheon. Janice and her brothers were appreciative. Afterward, Howard came over so I could help him do his taxes.

Later in the evening Pauline received a call from Walnut Creek. They were taking her brother to the hospital. He had phenomena. That was followed by a phone call from Chris. He had run out of gas. I delivered gas to him and went to the hospital. Joe, my brother-in-law, asked what that smell was. Pauline told him I smelled of gas. Home by midnight.

Wednesday evening I picked Pauline up at the hospital, as she got a ride there with a friend, with whom she had gone to lunch. On the way home we stopped and got supper. Joe was doing better. We learned later that Darlene’s breathing tube had removed.

This morning I got a call from my sister. Her husband, Willie is in the hospital.

Is it too early for 2017?
