My wife and I started to write a blog this morning. It’s called “Dear Granddaughter.”

Our granddaughter is 14 months old.  We love spending every Monday with her.

We divided our blog into two sections: “This Week” and “Something New.”

In the “This Week” section, we wrote about our trip to the Zimmer Children’s Museum in Los Angeles. What fun it was for our granddaughter to play at the water table, to glue stars on a piece of paper, and to play with the fire truck and the school bus.

In “Something New,” we wrote about a new gesture our granddaughter learned. When she can’t find something, or when she hears that you are looking for something, she moves her hands palms-up and shrugs, in a gesture that says, “I don’t know.”

Of course, we added photos from the week.

We would like to write one or more blogs dealing with her earlier adventures, ages 0 to 14 months. We think we can refresh our memories from the photos and videos we took and saved on our hard drive.

My wife and I both hope to continue the blog each week. It certainly is a special fun activity for my wife and me to do together.

As I sit here thinking about the blog, I can’t help but recall how quickly life goes by. We are born. We hopefully enjoy our childhood. If lucky, we enjoy adulthood and much of our older age.

But we all know people who are not so lucky. Their lives are cut short by a variety of maladies. Just how can we best remember the lives of our loved ones?  It’s tricky, because any data we store, such as photos and videos, likely will not last through time.

The best way I can think of preserving those memories for a long time, is by giving out flash drives with photos, videos, and written work to family members and close friends. Perhaps they will be able to pass down the information through generations.

Aside from that kind of remembering, we might stop and realize that God remembers for eternity. That feels better.
