Community Development Dept.

  • BIT Culver City Creative, LLC –A building permit was issued for a nine-tiered level parking structure, accommodating 990 stalls, at 5701 Hannum Ave.
  • Cold & Thirsty – A final building inspection was completed for a 700 square foot buildout of an existing retail space at 12460 Washington Blvd.

Fire Dept.

  • Evacuation Training – Four Points Sheraton Hotel staff participated in an Emergency Evacuation Training. Event. Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Christine Parra facilitated the training, which concluded with staff evacuating the hotel to pre-designated meeting places. Future hotel training will include fire safety and safe use of a fire extinguisher
  • Water First – Culver City residents picked up their 55-gallon emergency water barrels that they ordered through the city’s Water FirstNinety barrels were ordered, equating to 90 Culver City households being more prepared to withstand a disaster.  The overwhelming response has prompted staff to make it available again, in September. Credit goes to Culver City residents Dr. Ira Diamond and Carol Diamond for spearheading the program, to Stephanie Benjamin for volunteering to help distribute drums, to John Pelico for creating a flyer, and to Community Service Officer Fabian Mauricio.

 

Parks, Recreation and Community Services Dept.

  • Camp Season – Summer Camp season begins Monday for 10 weeks with games, activities, challenges and excursions.   June 23 is the popular Olympics Day. Special activities include jumpers, obstacle courses, soccer, basketball and other competitions.
  • Teen Center – Another successful year — 281 members participated in the Fall Semester and 272 in the Spring Semester. Friday, last day of the school year, there will be an ice cream social, starting at 12 noon, until the ice cream runs out. Participants this year enjoyed varied activities including “Minute to Win It” challenges, Frisbee Golf, Air Polo, multiple cooking projects, field trips to UCLA, UCLA Bruin Corps tutoring and board game tournaments. and so many more fun, popular activities.
  • Mentoring Program –Fourteen young people,14 –19, will be employed in various departments throughout the city. The Human Resources Dept., Senior and Social Services, and the Recreation Division will help mentor the students who will receive on-the-job training along with mentoring services from select staff.
  • Afterschool Recreation – The Culver City Afterschool Recreation Program, CCARP, begins each year with a recycling contest for all students participating. Recycling is an educational program geared toward teaching the value of recycling to reduce carbon dioxide and greenhouse gasses and the amount of trash that goes to landfills, in addition to earning money by collecting bottles and cans. The program encourages students to work together to create a greener environment. Recycling collection stations are part of a recycling program and a collaborative effort with the Public Works Dept.’s Environment Programs and Operations Division. Each year, the class with the most recyclables wins a pizza party, and each student receives a certificate. This year Lindberg-CCARP won the pizza party with 1,529 recyclables collected, barely topping Linwood Howe-CCARP, with an impressive 1,257 recyclables.
  • CarFit – The Senior Center and Social Services Division will host a CarFit event on Saturday, July 23, 8:30 to noon at the Senior Center. CarFit offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles fit them. A team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure they fit their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. A CarFit check takes 20 minutes. Open to drivers 55 and older, appointments are required – 310.253.6700.

 

  • Expo Celebration – The department assisted at the Culver City Expo station on the day the light rail route officially was extended to Santa Monica.

The event also featured the Strummers Ukulele group, based at the Senior Center. The Strummers had a ukulele flash mob at the party, playing songs such as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and the original tune, “Riding the Expo Line.”

  • Awareness Day – World Elder Abuse Day is on Wednesday, June 15. Elder abuse can occur anywhere –in your home, in nursing homes, or other institutions. It affects seniors across all socioeconomic groups, cultures and races. Talk with family members, friends, and professionals that you can trust. Unscrupulous people target seniors and will abuse or take advantage of them. Making a report in instances of abuse or neglect is the right thing to do and it’s easy. Whom do I call? In cases of immediate danger, call 9-1-1. Another resource is The Aging and Adult Services Call Center Hotline, 877.477.3646.

Police Dept.

  • Commanders Meeting – Capt. Ron Iizuka attended the South Bay Commanders meeting hosted by the Hawthorne Police Dept. These meetings are held to hpromote a regional approach to identifying and addressing crime trends and current issues facing law enforcement. The area’s commanders represent the following dsepartments: Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, Inglewood, Gardena, Palos Verdes, L.A. County Sheriff’s and the California Highway Patrol.

Transportation Dept.

  • Lin Howe Field Trip – Culver CityBus partnered with thr School District to provide transportation for the Green Seat field trip to the Ballona Wetlands. Twenty-two Students were provided with Culver CityBus bags and TAP cards and rode Line 4 to and from the Ballona Wetlands for their tour.
  • Expo Community Station Party –Culver CityBus, in partnership with Metro, helped host a community celebration at the Culver City Expo Station to mark the grand opening of the Expo Line from Culver City to Santa Monica. For 30,000 visitors, the day’s activities were free from 10 to 4. Visitors were encouraged to Explore Culver City for a taste of what it is like to live, work, and play here.
