City Manager’s Office

Two-Wheel Successes – An estimated 70,000 people on bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards and those pushing strollers participated in the Culver City-to-Venice CicLAvia event explored Culver City, Mar Vista and Venice on streets closed to vehicular traffic two weeks ago. Culver City Police, Public Works and Fire departments worked in conjunction with the LAPD, the Los Angeles City Fire Dept., the Los Angeles County Fire Dept., and the Sheriff’s Dept. to ensure safety.

 

 

Urgent Care – Mayor Mehaul O’Leary, Vice Mayor Andy Weissman and City Councilmember Meghan Sahli-Wells were on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome Cedars-Sinai’s new urgent care center, at the corner of Culver Boulevard and Madison Avenue.

 

 

Community Development Depot.

Splash Fruit – The Building Safety Division has completed a final inspection for a new mall kiosk at Westfield Culver City.

Kilter – Building Safety issued a permit on July 31 for a tenant improvement for a new storefront facade and interior retail space at 8850 Washington Blvd. Kilter is a new retail concept focused on men’s stylish and functional athletic wear. Kilter hopes that its premium assortment of athletic wear will offer another option to shopping at mainstream retailers for gym apparel and athletic leisure wear.

Nantworks, LLC – Building plans have been submitted for a 14,192-square foot tenant improvement to add partitions and plumbing at 9922 Jefferson Blvd.

Crush Cancer Event — Dogtown CrossFit will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 10, to raise awareness for cancer.  The event will provide workout stations at various locations on Parcel B where attendees can cross train.  Attendees will make a contribution to participate.

 

Fire Dept.

Strike Team – Two engine companies were dispatched, per a mutual aid request, to help control the Mad River Complex fires in Northern California on July 31. The engine companies are part of Strike Team XLA-1075A, which also consists of resources from Beverly Hills and Santa Monica.  After a 16-hour journey, crews immediately began working on structure defense in the Ruth Lake area of the Six Rivers National Forrest.

The department sent a new team of eight personnel to replace them a week ago. There has been no interruption in emergency services to the Culver City community, as the Department immediately called backfill crews to staff reserve engines.

 

Window Washers Saved – During a recent power outage, the department rescued two window washers stranded on the side of the Sony Pictures Plaza building.

Department Training – Over a recent weekend, personnel practiced ventilation and forcible entry skills on three buildings slated for demolition at Sony Pictures Studios.

 

Parks, Recreation and Community Services Dept.

Every Week – Every Wednesday, 50 Wednesday Work Project volunteers gather at the Senior Center to process mass mailings for local non-profits.  Recently, they helped the School District prepare 600 binders for incoming Middle School students.  Label, stuff, seal, collate, stamp, fold, alphabetize, sort zip codes, prepare goodie bags, assemble Walk-a-Thon participant packets. Home Delivered Meals  – The Senior Center needs drivers for the Home Delivered Meals program on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays,  10:30 to 12:30.  Volunteers should have a car and auto insurance.  Contact Adam Ferguson at 310.253.6727 or by email at adam.ferguson@culvercity.org.

Any Volunteers?  – Fiesta La Ballona is seeking volunteers for the coming weekend. Opportunities – Among upcoming volunteer opportunities are the Audubon Society Ballona Wetlands Education Program – annual training begins Thursday, Sept. 10.  KOREH L.A. will host a volunteer training for its LAUSD-wide one-on-one reading program at elementary schools on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Temple Akiba.  Adopt & Shop always is looking for new volunteers – especially dog- walkers on weekdays.  Food Forward Gleanings at the Culver City Farmers Market every Tuesday.  See Jill Thomsen in the Volunteer Office at 310.253.6722 or at jill.thomsen@culvercity.org.

Renters Sought – The Vets Auditorium Rental Operation includes Vets, the Teen Center and the Senior Center, the latter two being available in the evenings as well as before and after regular city programming.  Appointments in the Rental Office may be made by calling 310.253.6625 or vmc.booking@culvercity.org.

Wristbands – Pre-sale wristbands for Fiesta La Ballona this coming weekend are available for $25 at the Recreation Registration Counter through Friday.  Wristbands will be sold at Fiesta for $30. (310.253.6650.)  On Friday from 5 o’clock to 10, carnival ride tickets will be sold at a special price – two riders for the price of one.

Fiesta Food Vendors – There will be many food trucks and food vendors at Fiesta.  Hand-dipped corn dogs, Connecticut lobster roll, West African cuisine chicken, deep fried Oreos, Mother Trucker vegan burgers, funnel cakes, bacon wrapped hot dogs, and a range of ice cream treats.  See www.fiestalaballona.org to view the list of food trucks and vendors.

Historical Society – The Culver City Historical Society’s Archives and Resource Center will be open during Fiesta La Ballona, Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 4. See the Historical Society’s signs at the rear of the Vets Auditorium. There will be a special exhibit of historical Fiesta memorabilia and original Fiesta princess gowns from the 1950s.  Inside, browse through the merchandise area, which has unique historical items for sale. Police Dept.

Commanders Meeting – Capts. Allen Azran and Ron Iizuka recently hosted the monthly South Bay Commanders meeting in Culver City, where officers discuss crime and other issues related to the region.

Neighborhood Watch Meeting – Lt.  Sam Agaiby attended the Tellefson Park Neighborhood Watch meeting and discussed current crime issues in the area.

 

Public Works Dept.

Energy Use Reduced  – The city’s energy consumption in July was 16 percent lower compared to a year ago.
