I received a call this morning from a man who has been a friend for 15 years.
Sixty-four years old, he has been single for many years. He thought he had become accustomed to living on the financial edge.
But lately nearly all work has dried up.
My friend, whom we will call Bob, is a worker, not a collector of benefits.
He was in tears when we spoke because his bills are continuing to roll in while his wallet echoes emptiness.
Not only can he not cover the bills, he barely is able to make his rent.
Unimaginable as it is in this richest paradise, a man who lives on the Westside actually walks around with a growling stomach.
Normal person from a solid family background.
He scrambles for food each day.
He is an industrious worker.
“Tell the people I will do anything,” he said this morning. “Part-time, fulltime. It does not matter. I will do anything. Any hours, night or day. I just need work. I go out every day. But I have not been able to find anything.”
