Dateline Dayton – Thanksgiving was a busy day for Pauline. I helped a little. She prepared breakfast for five of us, including our son Chris and the two daughters of our youngest son Jon.
The girls stayed until mid-afternoon. We played several games, and we were ready to play another when Madison decided she was tired. She took a nap. Julia and I joined her eventually.
At 5:30, Chris, Jon and Bill arrived for supper. Pauline had heated a ham, which was very tasty. Along with other fixings, it was a very great meal. The boys stayed until Chris left abruptly, saying he wasn’t feeling well.
Friday was a workday for me. Pauline used the time to clean up the kitchen. Our dishwasher is not in operating condition. It needs to be replaced. Julia had a Friday soccer match. Since it was raining, Pauline had no interest in going.
Saturday, we went to breakfast at George’s, then onto Aullwood Nature Preserve for a Christmas bazaar. After a few errands, we came home to see the second half of Ohio State’s big victory over archrival Michigan. Afterward, we treated ourselves to supper in Waynesville. Upon returning I noticed that our furnace was constantly running. I didn’t think too much about it, but I did turn down the thermostat.
Sunday morning it dawned on me that the furnace was operating on the electric heater, not the heat-pump. Sure enough, the compressor was not functioning. I turned the thermostat down more, and off we went to church, followed by breakfast.
Valuing an Antique
I had made arrangements to meet Antique John at an antique mall because he had a National Cash Register clock I wanted to see. Pauline went to see her brother. The clock was neat. I would like to own it. However, John wants to trade for it. I don’t know what I have left that I want to part with that would be equal to the value of the clock.
When I got home, I took the dog for a walk Both of us got back to the house at the same time and we watched the Cincinnati Bengals end their two-game losing streak.
First thing Monday morning, I called the service people about the furnace. They said they would arrive between 12 and 3. Turns out a spider shorted out my heat-pump. For $90, the dead spider was removed. Our system is working. The serviceman said I was lucky. I thought so, too.
Oh, Shoot
In a pop-up message on my computer today there was a story about items banned on college campuses.
Some did not surprise me. At one university in California, the American flag is banned. What! We live in America. There is no place our flag should be banned. Here is a simple solution if the flag offends you. Leave. Find a country that doesn’t have a flag.
If I were a student in Germany, I would expect to see German flags throughout the university. It wouldn’t offend me. Political correctness is out of hand.
Something must be done the shootings in our country. I believe in the theory that guns don’t kill, people do. How do we stop the people from killing?
To my Jewish friends, Happy Chanukah starting Sunday night.
