Lately there has been a spate of poetry at City Council meetings – thanks to Dr. Janet Hoult, honorary poetess laureate.
At last Monday’s meeting, Dr. Hoult introduced Mo de Koff, a hometowner.
“ I was born here, raised and educated in Culver City (Class of 1960),” Ms. De Koff says.
“I have been storytelling and writing most of my life. Now I love being creatively challenged in Dr. Janet Hoult’s Word Painting with Poetry class at the Senior Center.”
On the occasion of Senior Citizens’ Appreciation Month, Ms. de Koff said, “it was an honor to read my short poem ‘Time.’”
Here we present two of Ms. de Koff’s works.
Time
Time tiptoes in unheard, unseen
Quietly leaping into my chair
She sits on her haunches, vigorously licking one paw
Then rubs it over her face – whiskers, ears and all
again and again
time after time
She circles the cushion curling into a ball
She purrs contentedly. Then, Old Man Clock smiles down at Time
Sweet, soft and furry, as she snuggles
He stands in the hallway, just like a sentry on duty
His hands sweep his face all ‘round – circles brow and chin
over and over
hour after hour
He stands at attention ticking off the minutes
He tocks contentedly.
The ‘Senior’ Prom
They sway rhythmically as a pair,
no need to think about each move.
Dancing partners without a care,
gliding together in a groove.They’ve both dressed very similar;
they easily move fast or slow.
Big band music’s so familiar,
it twirls them back to long ago. It’s the Center’s Senior Prom date,
ending now with their favorite tune.
No worries ‘bout being out late –
it’s just Four … in the afternoon!
