Students in WLAC's health care training program

West Los Angeles College is now preparing students to become Dental Assistants and Autism Technicians. Students can save thousands of dollars by earning their degree or certificate at an accredited community college like West rather than at private career colleges, some of which lack accreditation. Information sessions on the Dental Assistant program will be held March 24 and May 11 at the college at 6:00 pm in the MSA building. Other program information sessions this spring include Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, and Pharmacy Technician. Visit www.WLAC.edu/Allied-Health for more information or call (310) 287-4464.

The Dental Assistant program offers both a certificate and degree option. This is in addition to the college’s highly praised Dental Hygiene program. Dental assistants perform tasks including providing patient care, taking x-rays, recordkeeping and scheduling appointments. The certificate program can be completed in just one year and graduates will be able to sit for the Registered Dental Assisting License Exam. The Autism Technician program takes only one semester to complete. Students are prepared to work on a team of professionals who deliver behavioral interventions for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The program includes a 36-hour internship and prepares students to pass the Board Certified Autism Technician (BCAT) exam.

“We very excited about these additions to the Allied Health Division here at West,” said Celena Alcala, interim dean over career education programs. “In some cases, in as little as a semester or year, our students can be ready to secure jobs in a part of the workforce that is steadily growing. And, these positions typically offer growth potential on the job or through further education.”

West is located in Culver City north of the Westfield Mall. Parking is ample or students can ride the Culver City green bus right to campus. Many students qualify for financial aid or fee waivers and resident tuition is still just $46 per class unit.
