Re: “Weissman Against Artificial Time Clock”

Hardly any City Hall denizen in the last 35 years has politics as deeply ingrained in his kishkes as Vice Mayor Andy Weissman.

Imagining Mr. Weissman being away from City Hall as like envisioning Culver Boulevard as a muddy path or the Sony campuses confined to a failing lean-to.

Neverthless, come April, he will be out of elected office, dumped by the questionable wisdom of early 1990s’ term limits, the period when the concept became a fad.

Term limits requires its victims/targets to lay out for two years before being eligible to return.

Would Mr. Weissman — patriarch of the City Council for purposes of wisdom and history — consider coming back after sitting for two years?

“Unlikely,” was his instinctive response.

“I have been encouraged to think in those terms.

“Two years is a long time. Things change in two years. I am not sure the city would be the same. I am not sure I would be an asset if I came back.”

The searchlight of Mr. Weissman’s nimble mind shined on the few Council members who have tried to come back.

“Albert Vera did it,” the vice mayor recalled. “He was uncomfortable in his role when he came back.

“He was not perceived in the same way. He did not have the same degree of influence with his colleagues.

“It remains to be seen what type of elected you would be if you came back.”

(To be continued)
