Unlike his four City Council colleagues who have come down unequivocally for a Styrofoam ban and a map on how to get there, Vice Mayor Jeff Cooper takes a more conservative stance.

Ever the humorist, “I love Styrofoam,” he said. “A good insulator. Keeps things warmer than anything else.”

Maybe, but Mr. Cooper largely was kidding.

The vice mayor supports what appears to be an inevitable ban on Styrofoam, but he is not willing to go much further.

He is waitingfor the Sustainability Subcommittee of Goran Eriksson and Meghan Sahli-Wells reports its findings back to the City Council.

“After they have done their due diligence,” Mr. Cooper said, “and we have heard from both sides, the Council will have more information and we can decide.

“As City Council members,” said the second-termer, “it is our job to listen to both sides. Then we can easily make our decision.”

While Mr. Cooper unequivocally supports banning Styrofoam food containers, the vice mayor is undecided about widening the ban.
