Scott Wyant’s words sounded like his old self this morning, minutes before the 10:30 start of what looks like all-day testing for a suspected brain tumor.
“Surrounded by love, support, prayers and professionals who have my best interests at heart,” cheerily reported the perennially upbeat recent City Council candidate.
“Sorry that I won’t be analyzing Culver City’s budget and that I won’t be able to say goodbye in person to (Vice Mayor) Andy (Weissman) and (Mayor) Mehaul (O’Leary) and helping with (prospective Mayor) Jim Clarke’s coronation.
“But,” Mr. Wyant added, “I probably will be otherwise occupied.”
He had planned to attend this evening’s multi-layered ceremonies in Council Chambers. Meghan Sahli-Wells, Thomas Small and Goran Eriksson, who finished ahead of Mr. Wyant in the April 12 City Council election, will be sworn in.
Instead, he is corresponding from his bed at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Hospital, where he has been a patient patient since Friday.
Surgery, once reported for today, tentatively is scheduled for tomorrow.
The erudite Mr. Wyant, the only Council candidate to use the term “fungible,” cracked a line about why today’s testing will consume much of the day:
“My massive brain, don’t you know.
“They told me nine doctors will be involved.
“And someone to give me a flattering haircut – if that is possible,” said the tall surfer who has outgrown most of the hair atop his head.
Away from the workaday world, the spirited surfer has gained an ocean’s worth of unanticipated spare time to search and ponder.
“I have a lot of writing to do about the whole experience,” he said. “Déjà vu about places I never have been, except in literature and imagination.”
