Dateline Carson — The Chargers’ and Raiders’ football organizations have teamed up with city of Carson leaders, the Carson Boys and Girls Club and Santa Claus to sponsor a toy giveaway program today to benefit several thousand local school kids.
Between 5 o’clock this afternoon and 8 this evening, toys will be distributed in the east parking lot of the Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center, 801 E. Carson St., Carson.
The eligible children are about 4,200 students in grades K-3 in 12 Carson public schools.
Another 200 children in the Early Childhood Program at the Carson Community Center will participate. Students will receive special coupons from their teachers signifying they qualify for the gifts.
“This is a generous gesture by the Chargers and Raiders,” said Mayor Albert Robles.
“This is further evidence of their commitment to making Carson their hometown.”
The two teams are seeking permission from NFL owners – sometime early in the new year — to play their home games at a yet-to-be-built stadium in Carson.
The teams’ $35,000 donation to the Carson Boys and Girls Club is facilitating the toy program. The club has organized the toy program with the help of staff from the city of Carson.
Assisting Santa Claus in delivering the toys will be Mayor Robles, Mayor Pro Tem Elito Santarina and Councilmembers Juanita Davis-Holmes, Jawane Hilton and Donesia Gause.
