After formally launching her A Brain for Education campaign for a School Board seat last Sunday, Prof. Kelly Kent will star in two events this weekend:

  • A Saturday night fundraiser, from 7 to 9:30, at The Whole 9 Gallery, 3830 Main St. — $100 per person, $150 per couple – featuring the music of  Mark Shulman and Julian Coryell.
  • Sunday morning at 10 o’clock, Dr. Kent will meet ‘n greet supporters at the home of former Mayor Gary Silbiger, 4436 Jasmine St.

In Rancho Higuera last Sunday at the home of a backer, Dr. Kent, a professor of psychology at Antioch University,  of neuroscience at Moorpark College, as well as being the owner of a consulting business, outlined her platform.

If elected on Nov. 3, she pledges to:

  • Emphasize sustainability as a key School District initiative, including the creating of a fulltime sustainability manager for the District.
  • Prioritize classroom design that supports team teaching and small group learning.
  • Build a stronger relationship between the School District and City Hall.
  • Work to make school lunches healthier on all campuses.
  • Enhance professional training that enables teachers to reach all students – those that need the most intervention as well as those that benefit from greater challenges.
  • Encourage the School District to make computer programming classes available for all high school students.

After earning a Ph. D in neuroscience from USC, Dr. Kent co-founded adaptED Consultants, where she provides brain-based professional training for teachers, parent education, and student enrichment.

An active volunteer throughout her daughter’s tenure at Lin Howe Elementary, she was instrumental in founding and implementing a free, before-school Spanish language instruction program, administered and taught entirely by volunteers.

Additionally, Dr. Kent is a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission.
