Her election to the School Board still is too fresh – much less than 48 hours old – for Anne Burke to have begun formulating specific plans after she is inaugurated in a few weeks.
“Right now I am in an appreciation mode,” Ms. Burke said this morning.
“I am giving my heartfelt thanks to many of the people who supported me.
“I also am trying to reach out to those people in the community who are on the Board, elected officials, to strengthen those relationships.”
When Ms. Burke was asked what element was chiefly responsible for victory in joining Dr. Kelly Kent as the new twosome on the School Board, her response was immediate.
“Personal relationships are really important in Culver City,” she said.
“They are important in any political arena, but especially with the small-town, close-knit community we have in Culver City.
“I have good working relationships with many people at all of the school sites,” said Ms. Burke, who has lived here 10 years, well before either of her children started school.
“Not new relationships, either. These are relationships that have been created and fostered over time.”
Stepping on the gas and accelerating into late 2019, what would Ms. Burke like school parents to say about her first term on the School Board?
“I would hope they could recognize and acknowledge improvements in the Middle School, in the high school and reaching out to a greater population of students, that I had an impact on students who may not otherwise have been recognized.”
Speculating further, “I hope they will have positive things to say about allocations for the bond money.”
Does Ms. Burke have an agenda of priorities?
“The bond will be the priority,” she said. “As much as I know about process and the bond, more homework and research still are to be done.
“I want to make sure I come in new as someone who is being positively reflective, someone who has done here homework, who comes to meetings prepared.”
