Re: “Generously, Small Salutes Meghan and Cooper”
You don’t have to be familiar with new City Councilman Thomas Small’s pedigree to soon realize he is a true Ivy Leaguer, even if he did grow up in the Bay Area and spend most of his life in the West.
His collegial, disciplined, polished academic breeding informs every measured observation when he speaks up at City Council meetings.
Unlike many or most philosophical partisans, Mr. Small is a deeply committed liberal who soon may co-opt his listeners into his way of thinking because he sounds so reasonable and bi-partisan.
With that background, when Mr. Small last was seen here, he was talking about how Council colleagues had influenced him before his election victory last April.
After citing philosophical mate Meghan Sahli-Wells and Vice Mayor Jeff Cooper, he turned to Mayor Jim Clarke.
“As you know,” Mr. Small began, “I try to be diplomatic, to find a middle ground and compromise.
“Jim has been the model of that, the way he has served, the way he has run his campaigns.”
That left fellow freshman Göran Eriksson, as muscularly impressive – in a quite different way.
“Göran and I get along great,” Mr. Small said of the Swedish-born fellow environmentalist, business entrepreneur and financial maven.
“Göran and I are going to be serving together for awhile.
“We already have achieved a partnership and level of communication that is excellent.”
