Scott Wyant, one of eight City Council candidates running in the April 12 election, may be the happiest gentleman in Culver City this New Year’s Eve afternoon.
Warming up for his end-of-January fundraiser, Mr. Wyant is going surfing tomorrow morning, at daybreak, for at least two hours. He will be resuming a sacred New Year’s Day tradition that veered into a ditch last year.
Ever the tall, robust, muscular athlete, yesterday in his youth, today as he approaches middle age, on this date last year Mr. Wyant laid prone, frustrated, practically helpless, in his bed.
“A year ago on New Year’s Eve, I had just undergone the third surgery on my leg,” the result of a disabling basketball injury.
“I couldn’t walk,” he said. “I was in bed. Certainly I was not thinking about running for office at that point. My wife reminded me last night in the middle of the night how lucky I am, how much my life has changed in the last year.
Mr. Wyant was heavily bothered – 12 months ago – “that I had an uninterrupted 17-year run of surfing with my best friend Eric Stodder on New Year’s Day. Except for last year.”
Mr. Wyant vows he will rise at dawn tomorrow and prepare to resume his New Year’s surfing streak/tradition.
Messrs. Wyant and Stodder will surf off the coast of Manhattan Beach.
Why there?
“The water is cleaner there than any place in the area,” Mr. Wyant said.
Mr. Wyant’s Sunday, Jan. 31 fundraiser starts at 5:30 in the lobby of the historic Culver Hotel.
He promises “music, laughter and unusual prizes,” no exaggeration.
