Reminder About Centennial Year

Dancing the night away at Culver City's Centennial Gala

Mayor Jim Clarke, the unquestioned force behind the birth and blossoming of Culver City’s Centennial year, allowed one brief expression of disappointment.

In the beginning, as it notes in the Bible, before any players had been assembled, as it says in the Bible, and numerous millennia before Dr. Martin Luther King was born, Mr. Clarke entertained a dream:

Then as the mayor-to-be, he envisioned nearly daily reminders around the  community that Culver City was engaged in its Centennial Year en route to next September’s giant 100th birthday party.

A realist as well as a dreamer, Mr. Clarke fairly quickly realized that was an unrealistic expectation.

After the official and formal opening of Centennial Year six weeks ago, on the first day of October, the calendar for the year went silent for awhile.

This morning, the Centennial Committee dispatched the following press release:

“We want to thank all of you who came out to celebrate the launch of Culver City’s Centennial celebration with The Grand Gala last month.

“Gala photos are available at www.culvercity100.org

“As we begin our yearlong festivities leading up to the 100th birthday, The Gala was the dynamic opening party of the century. Attendees showed up dressed in their finest, feasted on marvelous food catered by Wolfgang Puck, experienced a video presentation highlighting Culver City’s history, and finally, danced the night away surrounded by a fabulous crowd.

“Check out our calendar on our website (www.culvercity100.org)

for updates regarding Centennial events. “This is a year-long celebration, and we hope that you celebrate with us.

“Do you have an idea to help celebrate the Centennial?

“If you are a member of an organization in Culver City that serves our residents and you have an idea for an activity (either an event or a project) for the Centennial, we want to hear from you. “
