With two-tiered job holder Martin Cole out at City Hall, the most intriguing question is:
What is the job description for the person who will succeed Mr. Cole as City Manager John Nachbar’s aide-de-camp?
Mr. Cole’s city clerk duties will be clear enough to replace.
Outlines for the next Nachbar deputy however have been amended.
Instead of “assistant city manager,” the next person’s title will be “assistant to the city manager.”
As Mr. Nachbar explained:
“In the city management profession, there are position levels one passes through to become a city manager.
“Oftentimes they start out as an administrative assistant in a city manager’s.
“The next rung above that in terms of position status and complexity is ‘assistant to.’
“Then once somebody has satisfied the requirements of that position, the next step is assistant city manager.
“This ‘assistant to city manager’ is a step below ‘assistant city manager.’ While it is a position that requires the completion of complex assignments, analyses, in leading projects and efforts in an organization.
“The job is for an individual who doesn’t have as much experience as one who would be classified as an ‘assistant city manager.’”
