A most unusual and memorable moment.
Especially for a teacher.
John Heyl, karate-do chief instructor shotokan for the Culver City Parks, Recreation and Community Services division, recently was presented with an autographed copy of student Elizabeth Anne Rao’s just published fantasy novel “Code!”
Ms. Rao, a junior at Harvard-Westlake High School, has been studying with the Culver City Shotokan Karate classes for more than 10 years.
She holds a first degree black belt.
Ms. Rao began the “Code!” project at the age of 11.
“I am anxious to see the great things accomplished by all of the young people who are training here,” Mr. Heyl said.
“Elizabeth already has her first novel. She may be the next J.K. Rowling.
“She had the passion and the drive,” said Mr. Heyl, “to earn her black belt. Now, this novel.”
