New Sick Leave Laws Were Big Deal – Before Mini Wage

With the new fiscal year dawning on July 1, two weeks from tomorrow, the Chamber of Commerce this morning sent out a 900-word reminder to members about the state’s imposing new paid sick leave law that affects every employer small and large.

No sooner had employers digested the sprawling complexities of the new law – that forces every business to rewrite its sick leave policies – than a second thunderstorm struck.

This is the new minimum-wage law passed last month by the Los Angeles City Council, establishing, ultimately, a $15 floor for all who work in the city.

But every community in Los Angeles County believes it will be unavoidably affected by the spillover effect once the law is applied, July 1 of next year.

No spillover, however, will touch Santa Monica.

As of the new fiscal year, two weeks from tomorrow, all contractors doing business with the city must pay employees a so-called minimum wage, at least $15.37 hourly (http://www.smgov.net/Departments/Finance/content.aspx?id=11969).
