Jim Clarke, tireless traveler among other talents, sounded slightly fatigued, having returned from his latest sally to Washington, D.C. at 1 a.m.

The City Councilman knows the Capitol’s terrain from his almost regular business visits.

The National League of Cities hosted a four-day conference this week, but Mr. Clarke was there for seven days. “I had some other business,” he explained.

He serves on a League committee whose name few could memorize. “It is a policy committee called Finance. Administration and Intergovernmental Relations, the FAIR Committee,” Mr. Clarke said.

“I like being fair about things,” he or his sense of humor said.

No stranger to the best known home in America, “we had a nice meeting at the White House on Wednesday. We received briefings from administration folks on drug abuse, immigration, criminal justice reform.”

Now that he is back home, Councilman Clarke will resume direct work for the Centennial Committee that he chairs.

Culver City’s 100th year is six months away from its September opening.

“We continue to do very well in the fundraising area,” Mr. Clarke said. “We are revamping our budget because we have additional items and expenditures.”

The Centennial group is expanding.

“We have entered into a contract for an administrative consultant,” Mr. Clarke said. “There is so much we have to do.”

The chairman said he just had received eight proposals. “The city has wanted us to have an event coordinator for the opening ceremonies, to coordinate the parade, the opening ceremonies and the block party because it involves a lot of city workers – off-duty police and Public Works people.”
