Seventeen years after limping into darkness, the Hawthorne Mall, once a magnet for the sprawling South Bay, in the days when it was an economic centerpiece, a hub for the city of Hawthorne, is on the ledge of being born again.

Gestation period is estimated to be two years, a smiling Mayor Chris Brown projects.

“The $200 million renovation of the Hawthorne Mall will bring in $6-$8 million in additional revenue, not to mention 5,000 new jobs for South Bay residents,” the mayor said.

“The city of Hawthorne is moving forward.”

To be more concrete:

“The city and the Charles Company, owners of the Mall, will have a development agreement presented to the City Council as early as July,” Mr. Brown promised.

“This will be one of the final steps before the much-anticipated arrival of Style Outlets at L.A.. (http://tinyurl.com/StyleOutLets).

One of the nation’s leading innovative adaptive re-use projects just minutes from LAX.

“The Hawthorne renovation project was completed in April,” Mr. Brown said, “and this will be one of the final touches.” (http://tinyurl.com/HawthorneNewBlvd)

Stepping a little deeper into the 21st century, the first-term mayor said that “the city is looking to provide free Wi-Fi down Hawthorne Boulevard for our residents and guests.

“Requests for proposals will be presented to the City Council in August,” he said. Bids are expected from Time Warner, Subrigo and T-Mobile among others.
