It Takes Time, Says Weissman

Outgoing Vice Mayor Andy Weissman has a friendly warning for the six non-incumbent City Council office-seekers in Tuesday’s election:

“Everybody (seeking a Council seat) underestimates the time involved,” he said.

“Mostly, people think of being a Councilperson as a twice-a-month activity, going to meetings.

“The only times we supposedly are doing any things are the Council meetings on the second and fourth Monday evenings,” said Mr. Weissman.

“That is far from the case.

“It probably is amongst the least amount of time you spend – at the meetings.”

There is the matter of preparation.

“Compare the number of hours at a Council meeting in a year with the time you spend either attending other meetings dealing with constituent issues or working with staff.

“That amount of time,” said the term-limited Mr. Weissman, “clearly exceeds the so-called public face time.”

How the Downtown lawyer is going to fare, what he will do with buckets of time when he officially separates from City Hall at the end of the month, is a towering question mark.
