Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has thrown his support behind Measure CC – a $3.3 billion bond measure to rebuild and expand facilities at the nine schools of the Los Angeles Community College District.
This measure will require the support of 55 percent or more of the voters within the district boundaries in the Nov. 8 election.
“I recently announced the L.A. College Promise Plan, which calls for one year of free tuition at our community colleges,” Mr. Garcetti said.
“Now that we will be making our community colleges even more accessible for our students, we need to make sure that we have the facilities and space that is necessary to accommodate the demand. That is why I support Measure CC.”
This endorsement comes on the heels of a broad base of support from other prominent elected officials and community organizations, including the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City,
LACCD Board of Trustees President Scott Svonkin and several others.
“Our community college campuses are leaders in workforce training in the region,” Mr. Svonkin said.
“Measure CC will allow our schools to expand our training facilities so that we can continue to lead the way in educating our future nurses, mechanics, skilled construction trades workers and others.”
The campaign for Measure CC is being led by a diverse group from business, labor, and local communities’ including Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, retired County Supervisor, Charlie Woo,
Chairman, Center for Asian Americans United for Self-Empowerment and Gary Toebben, President/CEO, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce.
With over 200,000 students attending the campuses of the LACCD each year, Measure CC will provide desperately needed funding to improve student access to affordable, first class higher
education in Los Angeles.
If approved, this bond measure will build new facilities at our LACCD campuses, including libraries, athletic facilities, new science labs, job training facilities, and child care centers. Because of the success of these three previous district bond measures, a recent survey of 1,000 likely voters showed that 63 percent feel that community colleges are doing an excellent or good job.
