For the third straight year, the School District is offering a Free Summer Lunch Program and More at LaBallona Elementary, that started today at the noon hour.

For Culver City, the concept originated with Supt. Dave LaRose.

His reasoning:

“Our kids need to remain healthy, connected, safe and whole during the summer months.”

The six-week free lunch program is rounded out with a variety of daily activities for students under 18.

The “more” part in the title refers to such activities as books, board games, special guests, arts and crafts, physical activities.

La Ballona Elementary will host the free lunches every Monday through Friday, until July 31, with one exception.

No program on the holiday weekend, Friday, July 3.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 until 12:30, and activities will be available from 11:30 until 1 o’clock.

The School District program will cater to all students under the age of 18, and all are on their honor regarding age.

“It has been proven that some students not only miss out on meaningful growth opportunities in the summer, but actually regress and lose academic, social and behavioral skills,” Mr. LaRose said.

This opportunity to eat a free healthy meal becomes even more impactful with the opportunities for students to learn, to play games, to connect with peers, to connect with caring adults, to participate in a summer reading program, to learn a new skills.”

Mr. LaRose said parents are encouraged to stay, play and partake in interactive activities with their children.
