Just as with Vice Mayor Andy Weissman, Mehaul O’Leary, the mayor of Culver City, does not judge arrival of the new year by a Culver City clock.
The owner of Joxer Daly, the Irish pub, explains:
“I have a lot of locals and regulars from Ireland, England and other parts of Europe. We celebrate New Year’s at 4 p.m., which us midnight in Europe.”
Mr. O’Leary, a Dublin native, is talking serious crowd at Joxer – his gang numbers anywhere from 30 to 50 fellows.
“We do sausage rolls, a glass of champagne, ring it in early, and go home and go to bed,” he said.
“By 6 p.m.,” the mayor said, “people usually are in their way home.”
Not everybody departs.
“I have a business to run,” said Mr. O’Leary, and besides the rest of the community is just warming up for New Year’s.
“I will make sure that the night crew comes on when the shifts change at 6 o’clock,” Mr. O’Leary said. “I will make sure the deejay gets there for our event.
“We will clean up from the day party, and then decorate the tables, have the whistles, the horns and all ready to go to ring in the new year right.”
How late will Mayor O’Leary be on the scene?
A mischievous look dashed across is Irish mug.
“Oh, that is highly confidential,” he said.
