A Hews Media Group-Community News series of 2015 stories by Publisher Brian Hews has resulted in the Fair Political Practices Commission fining Commerce City Councilman Ivan Altimirano $15,500.
The fine is substantially below what HMG-CN documented in the articles.

Two weeks before the Altamirano series, Hews reported on current Commerce Mayor Tina Baca Del Rio’s campaign violations.
That series resulted in a recent state record fine by the FPPC on Ms. Baca Del Rio of $104,000.

Mr. Altamirano’s violations were outlined in a series by Mr. Hews and include multiple violations of state ethics laws, conflict of interest, failure to timely file campaign finance reports, and inaccurate reporting of campaign expenditures.
Mr. Altimirano was cited for appointing his sister to the city Planning Commission, for making a decision about a traffic sign near his home and also the failing to file timely reports.
The hearing to confirm the fine is Sept. 15.
