Re: “Farragut King of Common Core”

The King is dead. Long live the King. Or something like that.

When it was reported here yesterday that Farragut Elementary was the King of Common Core by dint of posting superior scores in Common Core English and math testing, it was partially true.

Only the scores of the 384 students of El Marino Language School were better.

The story and headline should have read:

“El Marino King of Common Core.”

El Marino’s golden postings showed that 76 percent of their students met or surpassed the Common Core test target score.

In English, 74 percent of El Marino students succeeded.

Farragut’s comparative numbers were 63 percent and 67 percent, like El Marino, far above the statewide and national averages.

This celebration of lofty achievements will not last long.

It now is officially over.

Dr. Kati Krumpe, the assistant superintendent for the School District in charge of Common Core, said that the scores revealed yesterday will be used as a baseline for testing later this school year.

“We are not making comparisons,” Dr. Krumpe said. “This is a brand new baseline. That is it.

“The kids are different. The tests are different. How they take the tests are different,” she said.
