July will mark the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, landmark legislation signed into law by President George H.W. Bush.

The ADA ushered in civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities.

It assured equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities for access to businesses, employment, transportation, government programs and services, and telecommunications.

On Sunday, June 14, at the Senior Center, the community is invited to join the Parks, Recreation & Community Services and the Disability Advisory Committee for a unique celebration beginning at 4:30.

The program opens with a dance performance titled “Dancing through Parkinson’s” by Invertigo Dance Theatre.  Invertigo is a Los Angeles based group that offers weekly classes at Culver-Palms YMCA.

Attendees will learn about the experiences of five people who, over a two-year period, share personal stories of hopes, trials and tribulations in dealing with young onset Parkinson’s Disease in the short documentary film “Case for a Cure.”

Following the screening, guests will have an opportunity to hear from and interact with a panel of expert speakers, including local filmmaker Barbara Effros-Schwartz, a member of the Disability Advisory Committee, and representatives from the Parkinson’s Action Network and the UCLA Dept. of Neurology.

The celebration will feature resource tables from health and disability organizations, free appetizers and beverages, and a special ADA25 giveaway item.
