David Weisman, longtime member of the Culver City Democratic Club, who survived a complex of health problems in recent years, died on May 27, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. He was 88 years old.

An environmental engineer, “he kept track of the cleanliness of the ocean,” his widow, Ruth, explained.

He earned his bachelor’s in physics from Stanford and a master’s in sanitary engineering from Loyola Marymount.

The Weismans would have celebrated their 45th anniversary this year. They were introduced by Mr. Weisman’s sister at a Unitarian church in Palos Verdes.

A first-row regular at the monthly Democratic Club meetings, Mr. Weisman came by his political interest martially. “I was the one who got him involved,” said Mrs. Weisman, who also is 88.

How did she do it? “I was involved from the time I was a little girl because my mother was involved. It was almost an addiction with me. When Dave and I got together, I asked him to come to meetings with me.”

Once through the front door of politics, he ran like a thoroughbred, friends said.

A former member of the executive board of the state Democratic Party, Mr. Weisman formerly led Democrats United in the east San Gabriel Valley, and the Marina, Mar Vista, Venice Democratic Club before moving to Culver City in 1999. Mr. Weisman served a term as record secretary of the Culver City club.

In 2007, David and Ruth Weisman, along with Ronnie Jayne of the Democratic Club, were delegates to the state Democratic convention.

As a couple won the Trudy Cherness Active Democrat Club in 2009. Last year, the 54th Assembly District Democratic Club cited their years of dedication.

Mr. Weisman, who was buried by the Neptune Society, is survived by his widow, two children, Nia Kallhof and Malke Singer, three grandchildren, two adopted children, three great-grandchildren, a niece and a cousin.
