Coach Firing Case at Standstill

The most fascinating story of the summer may be the gnawing sea of uncertainties encircling the sudden termination of a summer camp coach by the Parks and Recreation Dept.

To the consternation of dozens of intensely frustrated parents, the case of the C3 Sunshine Camp coach seems penned in by walls, inaction by the City Council and silence from city officials.

Beneath the cloud of a threatened lawsuit on behalf of dismissed coach Adan Pulido, the single certainty this afternoon is that the City Council is not going to take up the matter.

When Mayor Jim Clarke polled his three colleagues at last week’s Council meeting, there was no interest.

None of the contacted principals around City Hall is talking, citing potential legal action.

“Litigation has been threatened,” City Manager John Nachbar said this morning.

“What we decided to do was not renew the contract of this independent contractor (Mr. Pulido). I just can’t go into the details of the matter.”

Mr. Pulido, an independent contractor with the city since April 2014, was fired by the Parks and Rec Dept. after a strange confrontation. He had a run-in with an angry city employee, possibly over a storage space dispute at Lindberg Park, Mr. Pulido’s base.

While he was canned for an unknown reason, the city employee evidently received no punishment beyond apologizing to the department – not to Mr. Pulido – for unacceptable profanities.
