City Manager’s Office

Olympic Champion –Mayor Jim Clarke welcomed four-time Olympic champion John Naber to the Culver City Expo Station last Wednesday.  Mr. Naber broke four world records while winning four gold medals at the 1976 Montreal Games.  Mr. Naber’s appearance was the latest promotion by Metro and the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic committee hoping to lure the Games back to Los Angeles in ’24.

Fire Dept.

Active Shooter Training – The department recently participated in active shooter training, conducted by the Police Dept. Classroom training and real time exercises were the main features.

Strike Team Deployment – The department deployed two engines and eight firefighters in late July to assist the Los Angeles County Fire Dept. with the Sand Fire.  The strike team, which also consisted of personnel and apparatus from the Santa Monica and Beverly Hills fire departments, saved several structures in the Acton area.

Parks, Recreation and Community Services Dept.

Pride Day – The annual Fox Hills Park Pride Day drew one of its most enthusiastic turnouts.  Nearly 40 persons helped beautify the park. They picked up trash, weeded the slopes, and assisted with planting.  A college student passing through was so energized he asked if he could stay and help. e did, He didHe did, for three hours!  Two middle school students were disappointed when the morning ended and it was time to collect their tools.

Fiesta  – Fiesta La Ballona returns to Vets Park the last weekend of the month, Aug. 26-28, with live music, a beer and wine garden, food trucks and food court, carnival rides, a petting zoo and pony rides.  The Entertainment Tent will offer three days of music at a dance party featuring Latin Jazz and Fiesta-Palooza on Friday night.  On Saturday, the sounds of mariachis, the British Invasion, 1980s funk and ‘90s rock culminates in SoCal Saturday Night, featuring tributes to the Beach Boys and the Eagles. Sunday features World Music with Caribbean, Klezmer/Mediterranean, and Brazilian music as well as Siberian Surf Rock.  http://fiestalaballona.org/ or 310.253.6650.

Police Dept.

Thanks – The department’s annual National Night Out at Vets Park was a success. It celebrates the partnership with our community.

Neighborhood Watch Meeting —  Lt. Sam Agaiby hosted a neighborhood watch meeting to encourage other neighborhoods to start a program.  Several groups said they were interested in organizing.

Graduation Day — Chief Bixby and the Command Staff attended the graduation of Sgt. William Jackson from the Supervisor Leadership Institute in San Diego.  The leadership class is an eight-month program designed to stimulate personal growth, leadership and ethical decision-making.
