Fire Dept.

Preparedness Week – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the state Office of Emergency Services conducted a test of the tsunami warning communications system last week.  Prior to the test, the city sent out a Nixle alert notifying all subscribers.  The test aired on local television and radio stations.  Although Culver City is not in a tsunami inundation zone, the city may be impacted by evacuations from adjacent coastal cities, should a tsunami occur.   www.culvercity.org/emergencyprep  Click on “Stay Informed.”

March for Meals – The department participated in the 14th annual March for Meals with Culver Palms Meals on Wheels., Chief David White, Asst. Chief Michael Bowden, and Battalion Chief Rob Kohlhepp helped deliver meals to clients of Culver Palms Meals on Wheels. The national March for Meals campaign is designed to generate public awareness about senior hunger and isolation.   www.marchformeals.com

Parks, Recreation and Community Services Dept.

After School Program – The Culver City Middle School After School Recreation Program recently presented the Monologue Showcase, a collection of short stories featuring a single student actor.

Annual Ritual – The Plunge is closed for maintenance through Sunday, April 10. Priorities:

  • Replacing two filter tanks
  • Replacing the boiler
  • Replacing several exterior building lights
  • Replacing several lights in the pool
  • Repairing trip hazards along the pool deck
  • General painting within the locker/shower rooms
  • General building repairs

Spring Egg Hunt – The sponsoring Kiwanis Club counted 300 participants in its Spring Egg Hunt. Children 10 and under hunted for eggs, with prizes for hunters who found a picture of a golden egg or a winner ticket in their egg.  Arts and crafts booths, game booths, photo booths, and costumed giant bunnies to provided further entertainment.  City Councilman Jim Clarke took part.

Senior Citizens –Parks, Recreation and Community Services staff, along with volunteers from the Senior Citizens Assn., attended the Parks and Recreation Society’s state-wide conference in Long Beach. At a gala on the final night, Culver City seniors received the society’s Service Award of Excellence as Champion of the Community.

Tuning up – The Culver City Symphony Orchestra (http://www.culvercitysymphony.org/) will perform Saturday evening at 8 at the Vets Auditorium.

Healthy Family 5K Run/Walk –The second annual Culver City Healthy Family 5K Run/Walk starts at 9 Sunday morning at West Los Angeles College. The event promotes an active lifestyle while supporting community programs that help youth develop wellness skills, grow strong bodies, and build self-confidence. www.runculvercity.com.

Police Dept.

Baker to Vegas Relay – Department  members ran the 120-mile, 20-stage, foot race beginning in Baker and finishing at Las Vegas.  The Challenge Cup Relay is the largest and most unique law enforcement race in the world. It seeks to promote camaraderie, physical fitness, pride, and teamwork among law enforcement personnel.  The grueling, non-stop competition demonstrates the need for superior physical fitness and teamwork.  The Department finished second in its division and 30th in a field of 271 agencies from around the world.

Neighborhood Watch Meeting – At  the March meeting of the Lindberg Park Neighborhood Watch crime trends and issues related to the Lindberg Park area were discussed by Lt. Sam Agaiby, Lt. Bill Browne, and officer Charles Koffman participated in the event.

Public Works Dept.

Bay Restoration Commission – Term-limited after eight years on the City Council, Mayor Mehaul O’Leary, chair of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission Governing Board since 2012, bid farewell this month to that seat, too.

Landscaping Guidelines  – The city has hired Artecho Landscape Architects to prepare landscape guidelines for residential parkways, the portion of a street between the curb and the sidewalk.  A draft of the guidelines will be presented at a 7 o’clock community meeting on Wednesday, April 13, in the Dan Patacchia Room, City Hall.

Transportation Dept.

Conference Time – Transportation Director Art Ida participated in the American Public Transportation Assn. Legislative conference in Washington D.C.  The Conference educates members on important federal legislation and policy initiatives, provides the opportunity to shape future industry positions and federal transportation policy, gives direction on the industry’s legislative strategy and advocacy efforts with the Congress and Administration executives plus sessions with key members of Congress, Capitol Hill staff, Administration officials, and Washington opinion makers. Mr. Ida also met with U.S. Rep. Karen Bass’s (D-Culver City) staff to discuss transportation issues facing Culver CityBus and the region.

Workforce Education Industry Conference – Paul Condran, Fleet Services Manager, spoke at the “What’s Trending: How Workforce Expectations Are Changing” conference at the Los Angeles Convention Center.  The conference was presented in partnership with the Community College District.

Mr. Condran discussed the technology challenges and educational requirements facing the automotive industry. He moderated a panel of technology experts from BMW, the Advanced Sustainability Institute, and NVidia.  The conference provided innovative industry ideas about the skill sets that will be required in several sectors, especially the advanced automotive technology sector, including advanced energy systems and autonomous vehicle advancements.  NVidia, for example, makes the autonomous information technology systems for the Google car.

Homeland Security – Culver CityBus is participating in the Dept. of Homeland Security’s “See Something Say Something” campaign. Alert communities play a critical role in keeping our nation safe, officials said. “If You See Something, Say Something” engages the public in protecting our country through awareness, by building partnerships and conducting other outreach.  Signs have been installed in all buses encouraging riders to be alert.
