Community Development Dept.

Morsco/Morrison Supply – Building plans were approved for a 2,716-square foot build out of a Kohler signature store, and design center at 3250 Helms Ave.

Apple, Inc. – Building plans were submitted for a 73,431-square foot tenant improvement of office space at 8550 Higuera St.

Daiso California LLC – Building plans were submitted for a 10,601-square foot tenant improvement for a new retail store at 11000 Jefferson Blvd.

NantWorks – Building plans were submitted for a 2,500-square foot tenant improvement, to repurpose existing space for conference rooms and offices at 9920 Jefferson Blvd.

Art Gallery – Building plans were submitted for a 2,294-square foot tenant improvement for a new art gallery at 8810 Washington Blvd. No. 102 (The PLATFORM).

Squeak E Clean – A final building inspection was completed by the Building Safety Division for an 8,360-square foot tenant improvement of office and edit rooms at 8533 Washington Blvd.

Yoga Salt – A final building inspection was completed by the Building Safety Division for a new yoga studio at 11957 Washington Blvd.

Spring – Building plans were submitted for a 746-square foot buildout of existing tenant space for a new retail store at 8840 Washington Blvd.  No. 104 (The PLATFORM).

Parabellum – Building plans were submitted for a 454-square foot buildout of existing tenant space for a new retail store at 8840 Washington Blvd.  No. 107A (The PLATFORM).

Flower Shop – Building plans were submitted for a 520-square foot buildout of existing tenant space for a new retail flower shop at 8830 Washington Blvd. No. 101 (The PLATFORM).

Event Space – Building plans were submitted for a 6,526-square foot buildout of an existing suite, at 8820 Washington Blvd. No. 301 (The PLATFORM).

ICW Group Culver City LLC – Building plans were submitted for site and building shell improvements to change the space from automotive repair to office and retail at 11461 Washington Blvd.

Cold & Thirsty – Building plans were submitted for a 700-square foot buildout of an existing retail space at 12460 Washington Blvd.

Business Improvement District – The City Council has approved the Downtown Business Improvement District 2016 Annual Report, including a proposed work program and budget and adopted a resolution of intent to levy assessments.  A public hearing has been scheduled for Monday.

Long Range Property Management Plan – The city is working on transferring all remaining eligible former-Agency properties to the city pursuant to the Successor Agency’s Long Range Property Management Plan.  The properties include the Kirk Douglas Theater, the Jazz Bakery, all remaining surface parking lots, and the Media Park and Ivy Substation leases with the city of Los Angeles.

Washington-Centinela – A community meeting is set for next Tuesday at the Culver West Richard Alexander Park Community Room to discuss the project with the neighborhood.  A preliminary project design will be available for the public to view.  A public notice was mailed to all Culver City residents and property owners within 500 feet of the project site.  The city will begin working on a Disposition and Development Agreement with the Developer Regency Centers.

Hayden Tract Spur – The project design is being completed by the city’s engineering firm.  Lighting and landscaping elements are being finalized.

Baldwin Site/Axis-Mundi – The city and the developer hosted a public meeting last month to solicit public comment on the developer’s proposed community benefit pursuant to the city’s Mixed Use Development Standards.  The developer proposes to construct and maintain 21 ground-level metered parking spaces in exchange for the City Council’s authorization to increase the project’s density from 35 units per acre to 50.  The developer’s proposed community benefit is scheduled for consideration at Monday’s City Council meeting.  The City is exploring inclusion of an affordable housing component.

Washington West Business District – The District is offering four days of holiday specials and promotions at select locations from Thursday through Sunday. The District is working with the Fire Dept. to help promote its “Spark of Love” Toy Drive. Fire Dept.

Spark of Love Toy Drive – The department is collecting toys at all three fire stations through Dec. 24 in support of the Spark of Love Toy Drive. As part of the greater Southern California campaign, the department is collecting new, unwrapped toys and sports equipment for under-served children and teens in and around Culver City.  Feel free to donate toys and sports items at any of the three fire stations:

  • Station 1 – 9660 Culver Blvd.
  • Station 2 – 11252 Washington Blvd.
  • Station 3 – 6030 Bristol Parkway

Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Dept.

Membership Registration – Registration for the Culver City Senior Citizens Assn. will be  Monday through Friday next week, between 9 and 2 in the lobby of the Senior Center. Annual dues are $13, a parking pass is $5, and there is a $12 fee to have the monthly newsletter mailed to you.  Cash or checks only for payment, no bills over $20.  Fitness room access is $125 per calendar year. All fitness room membership renewals require an updated 2016 physician’s form.

Holiday Talent Showcase – The Senior Center Holiday Talent Showcase will be next Tuesday at 1 o’clock.

Senior Center Volunteers – Some volunteers at the Senior Center are featured in a new video from the UPS “Wishes Delivered” holiday campaign.  These knitters are part of the Friday knitting group, which meets every Friday at 9 and is taught by volunteer Vivian Brown.  One of the group’s longtime volunteer projects is making comfort scarves for “Handmade for You,” which delivers the scarves to women in need.  In true Heart of Screenland fashion, the film crew was on-site for almost five hours for 10 seconds of footage.  https://wishesdelivered.ups.com/

Police Dept.

Police Recruit Graduates  — Police recruit Daniel Gigliobianco has graduated from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Academy after 22 weeks of training.

 

Public Works Dept.

Water Reduction Goal – Due to an unusually warm October, the statewide water use reduction was 22 percent. Culver City reduced water use by 17 percent compared to the same month in 2013. The total reduction of 18 percent reflects the total reductions for the period of June 1 through Nov. 29 compared to 2013 usage.

City Hall Landscaping – In response to the drought, the city intends to hire a landscape architect to prepare plans to replace City Hall’s landscaping with drought-tolerant species.  The list of drought-tolerant plantings will become a template for use at other city facilities.

Water Efficient Fixtures –  The city is seeking plumbers and contractors to replace nearly 300 water fixtures with more efficient ones at 24 different city facilities.  Responses are due Jan. 7.

Parkway Tree Planting – The Los Angeles Conservation Corps has finished planting 300 trees in the city’s parkways.   The Corps will prune and water the trees once weekly over the first year of life.  This project was funded by a $150,000 grant received by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas’s 2012 Competitive Tree Planting.

Fountain Repairs – Public Works crews performed minor repairs to the fountain in front of the Vets Auditorium.  Repairs included reinforcing existing skateboarding deterrents and installing new ones to replace the ones that are missing.  Repairs included treating rusted areas of the base of the sculpture.

Recycle Christmas Trees – Every year, more than 1 million used Christmas trees end up in California landfills, 15 million nationwide. Residents are encouraged to recycle trees locally or turn them into mulch for water conservation and weed control in the garden.  Reuse branches to make colorful holiday wreaths and separate the pine needles from tree branches to create tree-scented sachet bags.  Or, consider an artificial tree or a living tree that can be replanted in the yard.

Multi-family residents should contact the property manager on how best to dispose of trees after the holiday season. Culver City will provide drop-off services at in the Fox Hills Area.

It is unlawful and a fire hazard to leave unwanted trees at the curb or in the alleys for an extended period of time.  Recycle trees in the green waste bins.

Construction Updates:

Golden State Water Co. will continue the installation of pipe for water main replacement on Woolford Street, Orville Street, McDonald Street, and Janisann Avenue.

Golden State Water Co. will install pipe for water main replacement on Wesley Street between Higuera Street and National Boulevard.

Los Angeles Dept. of Water and Power will replace a water main on East Boulevard between Washington Boulevard and Park Avenue.

Centinela Avenue will be repaved from Green Valley Circle/City boundary to Bristol Parkway.  Changeable message signs advising the public of traffic delays will be installed.

 

Transportation Dept.

Line 4 extends to Playa Vista. Saturday service. Effective on Monday, Culver CityBus woll make the following service changes:

Line 4: Culver CityBus will be extending service from Westfield Culver City Transit Center into Playa Vista and adding Saturday service.  Line 4 currently goes from the Westfield Culver City Transit Center to the Expo La Cienega Station and the West Los Angeles Transit Center.

The Line 4 extension will be celebrated on Monday with a ceremony at 8:30 at the southwest corner of Waterfront Drive and Artisans Way in Playa Vista.  Guests include the City Council, Los Angeles Councilman Mike Bonin, and Marc Huffman, Vice President of Brookfield Residential.

Line 2: Culver CityBus will add new stops at Slauson Avenue/Sepulveda Boulevard (near the Westfield Culver City Transit Center) and at Bristol Parkway/Centinela Avenue (in front of Courtyard Marriott). Line 2 no longer will go into the Westfield Culver City Transit Center.

Line 1, Line 6 local, and Rapid 6 have minor schedule adjustments.
