Community Development Dept.

Airport Marina Honda and Ford –   Building plans have been submitted to install 12 in-ground automotive lifts for Honda and 15 in-ground automotive lifts for Ford, 6002 Centinela Ave.

Transwestern Comm. Services – Building plans have been approved for a tenant improvement and remodel for offices at 6101 Centinela Ave.

Symantec – The Building Safety Division has issued a permit for a 1,125-square foot tenant improvement to create a large conference room and a data room at 800 Corporate Pointe.

Devachan Salon – A final inspection has been completed by Building Safety for a new salon at 9355 Culver Blvd.

Picnic L.A. – Building Safety issued a has permit for a 2,932-square foot renovation of an existing café at 9900 Culver Blvd.

Yalla – Building Safety Division has issued a permit for a new Mediterranean restaurant at 9516 Culver Blvd.

On Duquesne, LLC –Building Safety Division has issued a certificate of occupancy for seven new townhomes at 4141 Duquesne Ave.

J & C Associates – A final inspection has been completed by Building Safety Division for a façade remodel, minor interior improvements in common areas, and restroom improvements, including ADA (American Disabilities Act) upgrades, at 5855 Green Valley Circle.

Apple/Beats by Dre – Building plans have been approved for a new gym in an existing building at 8600 Hayden Pl.  The Building Safety Division issued a permit for a 594-square foot interior office reconfiguration for iAds, and building plans were submitted for an interior reconfiguration of the “B-Office” at 8550 Higuera St.

Sherwin Williams – Building plans have been approved for a 7,627-square foot tenant improvement at 11513 Jefferson Blvd.

Target – Building plans were approved for interior remodeling of the existing Target store within the Entertainment and Home sections and the addition of Self-checkout lanes at 10820 Jefferson Blvd.

Runyon Group – Building Safety issued a permit for a 29,994-square foot tenant improvement, demolishing the roof for an internal courtyard, remodeling existing space, and change of occupancy from existing office/warehouse to business/retail at 8921 Lindblade St.

Bombet Hospitality Group – Building plans have been approved for the interior renovation of an existing restaurant, including a new kitchen design, new store front and entry door, and a barbecue grill and hood at each table, at 3829 Main St.

Holy Cow – A final inspection was completed by Building Safety for a new restaurant at 4130 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver Crossroads.

Stride Rite – Building plans have been approved for a 1,831-square foot tenant improvement for an existing retail store at Westfield Culver City.

Sprouts Farmers Market – Building plans were submitted ofor the relocation of existing equipment and the renovation of a salad bar at 5660 Sepulveda Blvd.

Punch Studios – Building Safety Division issued a permit adding 3,507 square feet of new second floor office space, adding a new exterior stairway, and revising the subterranean parking at 6025 Slauson Ave.

The Willows Community School –Building Safety has issued a permit on June 18th to demolish the loading dock and in-fill the dock with a landscaped avenue, trees, and benches at 8520 Warner Dr.

Salar Investment – Building Safety has issued a permit for a 4,328-square foot third floor addition, and a 3,995- square foot terrace, new kitchen, and restroom on first floor of a property at 5965 Washington Blvd.

Hatchet Hall – A final inspection was completed by Building Safety for a new restaurant at 12517 Washington Blvd.

Regional Investment & Management – Building Safety has issued a permit for a tenant improvement, with new stairs and a roof deck at 6122 Washington Blvd.

Petco Unleashed – Building Safety has issued a permit for an 850-square foot tenant improvement of the existing pet wash, reconfiguration of room, and new finishes at 13411 Washington Blvd.

Yoga Salt –  Building Safety has issued a permit for a new yoga studio at 11957 Washington Blvd.

Kaiser Permanente – Building plans were approved for the Behavioral Health Offices, remodeling existing group rooms to office space at 12001 Washington Blvd.

Kaiser Foundation Health Plan –Building Safety has issued a permit for reception area remodel at 12001 Washington Blvd.

Sony Pictures Entertainment –Building Safety has issued the following permits for Sony Pictures Entertainment, at 10202 Washington Blvd.:

  • A permit was issued to convert open office space into office No. 1406 on the first floor of the Thalberg Building.
  • A permit was issued for an interior tenant improvement on the first floor of the Jimmy Stewart Building.
  • A permit was issued for an 880- square foot tenant improvement, renovation, and reconfiguration of the collaborative release board.
  • Building plans were submitted for an office tenant improvement on the ground floor of the Jimmy Stewart building.
  •  Building plans were submitted for the Lean Building Center’s reconfiguration of wall partitions, new doors, new lighting, and new windows.

The Shop – Building plans were submitted for a new retail store and cafe, at 8820 Washington Blvd., The Platform.

Squeak E Clean – Building plans were submitted for an 8,360-square foot tenant improvement of office space and edit rooms at 8533 Washington Blvd..

 

Fire Dept.

Promotions – With the retirement of Asst. Chief Chris Syverson, Fire Marshal Mike Bowden was appointed as the next assistant fire chief, and Battalion Chief Brian Savage was selected for the fire marshal role. In addition, after contending in a highly competitive promotional process, EMS Coordinator/Captain Rob Kohlhepp was promoted to battalion chief, Capt. Roger Braum was promoted to EMS coordinator, Engineer Dave Rindels was promoted to fire captain, and Acting Fire Engineer Mauricio Blanco was promoted to fire engineer.

 

Parks, Recreation and Community Services Dept.

Volunteer Program – There are upcoming volunteer opportunities in Culver City.  Contact Jill Thomsen in the volunteer office at 310.253.6722 or at jill.thomsen@culvercity.org.  Volunteer opportunities include Fox Hills Neighborhood Cleanup in Fox Hills Park on Saturday at 9:30-noon. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2 o’clock to 3, Shoes for Homeless shoe sorting on Jackson Avenue. CicLavia, Downtown Culver City Hub, Sunday, Aug. 9, 8:30-4:30. Senior Center Programs – “Ask the Nurse” and “Ask the Therapist” sessions are offered at the Senior Center from 9 to noon on the second and fourth Tuesdays, a free service. County staff is available to the public, ages 50 and older. to answer questions regarding mental health issues such as feelings of isolation or depression, difficulty in communication, domestic violence, elder or financial abuse, when to seek counseling or therapy, medications and side effects, general wellness, and medical conditions, as well as taking vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure and weight.

After-School Recreation – Registration for the Culver City After- School Recreation Program (has begun for the new school year for prior-year students.  Registration for new students (who are also Culver City residents) has begun. New, non-resident student registration begins on this Saturday.  The program features structured, quiet time for homework assistance, timed daily activity rotations, and reading stations at each afterschool site.  This is staffed with highly qualified personnel who have a minimum of two-years’ work experience or education in afterschool child development programming.  Contact the Recreation Office at 310.253.6650.

 

Police Dept.

Homeless Outreach — On July 9, Irma Maldonado and Colleen Mieke, clinicians from the County Mental Health Dept., partnered with Lt. Bill Browne and contacted several homeless people within the city. This outreach program is designed to help homeless persons with resources to help find them shelter, medical care, and address other issues they may be facing. This was the first direct collaboration with the Health Dept. and the Police Dept.

Leadership Academy – Lt. Sam Agaiby last week graduated from the LAPD Leadership Program that included 136 hours of classroom learning and understanding leadership theories.

 

Public Works Dept.

Level 2 Water Restrictions – The City Council has authorized the implementation of Level 2 Water Restrictions per 5.03, Water Conservation of the Culver City Municipal Code. The Water Conservation Ordinance was also amended last week to exclude restrictions on filling and re-filling pools. In lieu of these restrictions, a new provision has been included to require covers for all pools and spas in the city.

In addition to the city’s permanent water restrictions, Level Two Requirements include:

  • Watering Days: Watering limited to two days per week and one day per week during November through March.
  • Repairs: Leaks, breaks or malfunctions in plumbing must be repaired within 48 hours.
  • Ornamental Lakes and Ponds: Filling or re-filling ornamental lakes or ponds is prohibited, except to the extent needed to sustain aquatic life.
  • Washing Vehicles: Using water to wash or clean vehicles is prohibited except by use of hand-held bucket or similar container, a hand-held hose equipped with a water shut-off nozzle, high pressure/low volume wash systems or at a commercial washing facility that utilizes re-circulating water.
  • Pools and Spas: Pool and spa must be equipped with covers

Volunteer for Rain Gardens – The Culver City Rain Gardens capture rain and surface runoff, filter noxious contaminants that would otherwise flow into Ballona Creek, and beautify the urban landscape. Help is needed to weed, water, and maintain the garden to give the newly planted natives time to take root and thrive.  Participants can receive Community Service hours along with plenty of feel good vibes for a job well done in helping to keep our waterways clean.

Note: Bring water, sunscreen, a snack if desired, and wear closed-toed shoes. Tools and gloves provided.

Construction Updates

Southern California Edison (SCE) will be replacing 7 utility poles in the alley behind 4301-4411 Sepulveda Blvd. The alley will be closed to through traffic during the pole replacements. The work is expected to be completed by Monday.

VCI Construction will be performing directional boring work to install conduit on Slauson Avenue and Bristol Parkway for new fiber optic cable. This work is expected to be completed by Friday.

Golden State Water will be installing a new water main and water service on Perry Drive between Fairfax Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard. The work is expected to be completed by Friday.

SCE will conduct vault removal and replacement on Flaxton Street east of Drakewood Avenue this week. This work is expected to be completed by next week.

Del Amo Construction will continue working on Washington Boulevard and on Landmark Street reconstructing the sidewalk, curb, and gutter. Lane closures will affect traffic on Washington Boulevard between Robertson and National Boulevards. There will be lane closures on Washington Boulevard intermittently through the month of August to accommodate this work.

 

Transportation Dept.

Roundtable with Karen Bass -Transportation Director Art Ida recently participated in a Metro Roundtable Discussion with U.S. Rep. Karen Bass (D-Culver City), new Metro CEO Phil Washington,  Metro Director Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker, Los Angeles City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson, along with civic and community leaders at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook facility.  Metro CEO Washington discussed his vision for the future as well as access to jobs, job training, and expanded Metro public transportation options.  Mr. Ida will be working with Metro CEO Washington to enhance public transportation in our region.
